Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach out to us if you cannot find an answer to your question.

We offer all new students a free introductory 30 minute lesson with no obligation to continue. Students are not required to bring a guitar to this lesson, if they do not yet own one.

On occasion we offer online lessons for students. These are dependent on students' circumstances. We encourage you to attend as many face-to-face lessons as you can.

Yes, in between lessons it is important that students complete practice tasks on their own guitar at home in order to maintain newly learned material. Before purchasing a guitar, please get in touch with us first to find out which guitar suits your needs. All students at Schubert School of Music learn how to look after their instruments from the very beginning of their learning journey, regardless of their level and age. This includes changing guitar strings by yourself, without the need to visit a music shop!

YES! We encourage all adults to discover or rediscover their love for playing music! Our adult students find learning an instrument one of the most rewarding experiences in their life. Some students are coming back to learning an instrument which they may have learnt in the past, others are discovering something totally new! Remember that as an adult you have the willingness and passion to play and practice your instrument. Most of all, you will not regret it!

We understand that sometimes life can get in the way! If you are unable to attend your lesson, please inform us and we can provide you with a makeup lesson. We require at least 24 hours notice for all cancellation of lessons.

Absolutely! Beginning on a classical guitar, a guitar with nylon strings, is a great way to establish a good foundation of technical skills, which can be applied to all styles of guitar playing. For young beginners, we recommend beginning on a classical guitar, as nylon strings (with a lower tension!) are gentler on the finger tips. After gaining confidence on a classical guitar, you will be ready to explore other styles of guitar! For older beginners, let's have a chat about your musical goals and find the right guitar for your preferred style!

Yes, we offer tuition in music theory and musicianship as part of our guitar and piano lessons to help students understand the fundamentals of music. Fundamental theory and musicianship skills are included in your instrumental lessons. If you would like further help in addition to your instrumental lessons, please reach out!

All lessons at Schubert School of Music are typically 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 1 hour long, depending on the student's age, level, needs and preferences.

No! At Schubert School of Music we help students prepare for AMEB and ANZCA grading exams. Some students' learning is enhanced by completing grading exams, some students excel without them! Exams are just a tool for your music learning journey and they are not a necessary part of your learning.
